Nausicaa: My Childhood Anime

Just last night I completed watching the movie by Hayao Miyazaki: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984). I was very happy I was able to watch it because when I was a kid way back 3rd grade as far as I can remember, I watched this title dubbed in English on a local channel on television.

The only scene I could barely remember was a flying glider and a quicksand scene. Since then I have been long searching for a specific title. Until just a few weeks ago, a friend suggested a certain director named Hayao Miyazaki since he knew I was interested in anime.

In attempt to urge my anime needs I browsed some of this director’s titles. I was surprised since not only are the titles under this director high-rated, they were also noted for several awards and nominations. By accident I stumbled upon Nausicaa. I read the review and synopsis and it rang a bell in mind. So I asked a colleague for a copy of this title and watched it.

I was completely drawn into the story and felt a very nostalgic atmosphere. I then realized a few moments later that this is the title I’ve been looking for!

Synopsis of Nausicaa (taken from MyAnimeList.net)

A thousand years after a global war, a seaside kingdom known as the Valley Of The Wind remains one of only a few areas still populated. Led by the courageous Princess Nausicaä, the people of the Valley are engaged in a constant struggle with powerful insects called ohmu, who guard a poisonous jungle that is spreading across the Earth. Nausicaä and her brave companions, together with the people of the Valley, strive to restore the bond between humanity and the Earth.

I highly recommend this title and other pieces directed by Hayao Miyazaki. I’m hoping that there are other newer titles that will pop out with a similar touch to his works.
